Shanon D: From Frumpy to Fab at (almost) Fifty!

She was tired of fad dieting, feeling low energy, and not seeing results. Now she’s down 42 pounds, off her blood pressure medication, and on the way to her “fittest, hottest self” by 50!

We love sharing inspiring women from our Balanced Babe Academy Community and Shanon is definitely one of those women who deserves to be celebrated. We watched her crush it in 2023 and we couldn’t wait to share her story with you and even provide an update here in 2024!

One reason Shanon’s story is so inspiring is because she has been through a LOT. As a middle-aged mom of two young kiddos who was recently divorced, relocating to a new state, and entering back into the work-force as a nurse during Covid, she found herself packing on the pounds. She blamed her age (being perimenopausal) for her weight gain – a common misconception many women make! She was on blood pressure and cholesterol medication with an “overweight” BMI, too tired to exercise with low energy throughout her day, and caught in a vicious cycle of over and under eating. Fad diets had failed her in the past and she knew the deprivation of eliminating the food she loved combined with the constant hunger from low calories was not going to be the answer for her. So many cards stacked against her, but where there’s a will, there’s a way…

In December of 2022, everything came to a head. “I was weighing in above my term pregnancy weight at 179 pounds. My blood pressure was uncontrolled even on medication. I had no energy. I was just getting through the day. My attitude left little to be desired.” And that’s when she found BBH!

“I liked that no foods were off limits and that it was all about balance. Also, the mindset of “it’s ok if you are over your calories or your macros aren’t balanced sometimes, just keep going”. Knowing this made me feel like this would be a program I could do and be successful at. One that allowed for mistakes and did not impose any restrictions.”

Habits & mindset changes she’s had since joining BBH:

  • meal planning and cooking balanced meals with intention
  • no remorse eating carbs and fats
  • food logging every day, even when mindless snacks sneak in
  • drinking 128 oz water daily
  • cut back the 1-2 glasses of wine per night to special occasions
  • at least 10k steps and added in an under-desk treadmill
  • mindfulness about what goes in her body
  • gained confidence and her kids have noticed saying “mom, you are so much happier!” *cue the tears!!!*

When it comes to physical progress, she’s killing that too!

  • currently 42 pounds down (maintaining!!!)
  • multiple inches lost overall – down to a size 4/6!
  • wearing a size small & medium
  • off all blood pressure meds with cholesterol trending down *cue more tears*
  • most importantly – has the energy to keep up with her kids!

We asked Shanon what motivates her to keep going and what is she most proud of and here’s what she said:

“My two active kiddos are my motivation, but most of all – myself! I am doing this for me! I enjoy being a part of the BBH community and sharing recipes and stories. The other women motivate me on days when I am just not feeling it. The group makes you feel like family and there is no judgment.”

Goals for herself going forward “to be the fittest, hottest version of myself by the age of 50” We. Love. This. Shanon – you are a true rockstar and we are SO happy for your success and the life-changing progress you’ve made. Stay tuned…Shanon’s story isn’t finished yet. This is just the beginning!
